Up to January 31, 2017, BSNL subscribers can take advantage of free USSD-based Mobile Banking services (*99#).

BSNL waives tariff to facilitate cashless financial transactions.

Up to January 31, 2017, all BSNL users can access free USSD-based Mobile Banking services by dialling the USSD Short Code *99#. A contract between BSNL and National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) was struck to offer its mobile clients USSD-based mobile banking services.

According to an official statement from BSNL, “BSNL has decided to waive the tariff of National Unified USSD platform until 31st January 2017” in order to “give impetus to the demonetization drive by the Government of India and to facilitate masses to do cashless financial transactions even with a feature phone.”

The National Payment Cooperation of India (NPCI) offers the National Unified USSD Platform (NUUP), a mobile banking service that uses USSD technology and does not require an internet connection on a mobile device. Customers utilize the USSD short code messages to access banking services including checking balances, withdrawals, deposits, and peer-to-peer transfers, among others.

The government’s attempts to move toward a society without currency will be supported by the free use of this service or feature. According to RK Mittal, Director (CM), BSNL, this will enable the usage of the electronic banking system and simplify things for the common citizen.

While banking services are available through mobile applications for smartphone users, USSD is more common among consumers with feature phones who lack internet connection for basic banking services. It is anticipated that the move would encourage low-end feature phone users, who account for approximately 65% of the Indian mobile market, to adopt mobile banking and payment services.

Customers of BSNL will get access to the mobile banking services that are expressly stated below.

  • Cash payment
  • Withdraw money.
  • Check out the account services (Balance inquiry and Mini statement – latest 5 transactions).
  • transfer of monies from a bank account connected to a mobile device in accordance with the RBI’s mobile banking regulations and through a suitable settlement method that has been certified by the RBI.
  • Administrative operations (for instance, register a cell phone, obtain an MMID, check the status of an EBT mapper, update a pin, and produce an OTP)

To immediately perform basic banking, dial *99#. Where the mobile phone is registered, one may check account balances and mini statements without an internet connection. The direct codes for banks are shown below:
