According to the most recent information, BSNL’s IoT/M2M SIM cards are offered at the lowest monthly rates starting at only Rs 16/-.

BSNL has introduced the revision in tariff plans for IoT / M2M Services for bulk user clients throughout India

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has introduced the revision in tariff plans for IoT (Internet of Things) / M2M (Machine to Machine) Services for bulk user clients throughout India. As consistent with modern-day information, BSNL’s IoT/M2M SIM playing cards are to be had on the most inexpensive month-to-month expenses of simply Rs 16/- onwards.

For those who are unaware, IoT / M2M products call for communication between two or more machines (machines) without human interaction. The Internet of Things (IoT) core requires connectivity from telecom provider carriers in order for this communication to take place. Because M2M / IoT solutions represent the future of sales for telecom provider carriers, TRAI developed a specific 13-digit numbering scheme just for M2M offerings.

The primary distinction between M2M/IoT services is that backhaul connectivity to the application servers of M2M/IoT service providers is provided here by telecom service providers. M2M service providers give their clients with the genuine services. The majority of the major telecom service providers (TSPs) have begun entering into partnerships with M2M and IoT service providers, who will use the connection offered by TSPs to deliver services to end users.

BSNL M2M / IoT SIM Cards

According to customer demand, BSNL will provide two types of SIM cards for M2M and IoT applications.

  • Normal SIM (Physical SIM)
  • e SIM (SIM embedded in M2M smart devices)

M2M SIM card costs: Physical SIM cards will cost Rs 10 each, however e-SIM cards are completely free.

What are eSIMs?

M2M devices include e-SIMs. The producers of the devices will upload the soft e-SIM profiles that BSNL will supply onto the actual e-SIM cards. The e-SIM manufacturer is chosen by the M2M service provider on its own. The device maker and M2M service provider will each get soft e-SIM profiles from BSNL, who will then burn the e-SIM profiles onto physical devices and provide them to the M2M service provider.

M2M Numbering Scheme (13 Digit Numbers)

For M2M applications, all telecom companies formerly offered the same 10-digit numbers. Later, a 13-digit numbering scheme was introduced in India on July 1st, 2018, only for M2M and IoT services, in accordance with TRAI directives. Additionally, TSPs were instructed to convert any existing 10-digit mobile numbers that had been assigned to M2M, IoT, and Smart City initiatives to the new 13-digit numbering scheme.

a 13-digit M2M number has three components:

  • M2M Identifier (3 Digits)
  • Licensee Identifier (4 Digits)
  • Device Number (6 Digits)

M2M Bandwidth Requirements / Type of Applications

1.Very low Bandwidth <1Kbps (Monthly usage 10KB to 1MB) e.g. remote sensors applications.

2.Low Bandwidth, 1kbps to 50 kbps (Monthly usage 1 MB to 10 MB) e.g. utility, health, security monitoring

3.Medium Bandwidth, 50kbps to few MB, (Monthly usage 10MB to 300MB) e.g. retail, ticketing, inventory control, gaming, digital picture frames

4. High Bandwidth, in Mbps (Monthly usage >300MB to 90GB) e.g., Digital signage, Video surveillance.

M2M/IoT Services – Features / Facilities

1.Outgoing / Incoming calls shall be allowed to/from predefined set of maximum one number only.

2.Outgoing / Incoming SMS shall be allowed to/from predefined set of maximum two numbers only.

3.Data communication –The APN shall be whitelisted with a set of 4 IPs in accordance with the DoT guidelines.

Responsibilities of M2M Service Providers

1.e-SIM cards are to be procured from a GSMA certified SIM Manufacturing facility

2.e-SIM card/Device is to be certified from an accredited laboratory

3.Use of BSNL subscriptions in M2M SIM Cards/Devices are compliant to applicable standard of GSMA

APN Requirements

Access Point Name is referred to as APN. An APN adds an extra layer of protection to all the devices on your network by serving as a go-between for a specific network and the devices attempting to connect to it. The proper SIM card is the first step in using an APN. A SIM card that has been appropriately configured is required for every device that wishes to connect to an APN network. Without also having access to your APN network, no one can connect to your IoT devices. In addition to reducing network congestion, having a private APN network means that you will only be sharing it with your other devices.

1.Unique, fixed APN will be allocated to any new customer availing M2M/IoT services.

2.The unique APN shall be whitelisted with a set of 4 IPs in accordance with the DoT guidelines.
3.Any existing customer using default APN should be migrated to unique APN.

Previously, selling phone and data services allowed operators to differentiate themselves from competitors in terms of data plans, minutes of use, and device kinds. However, telecom operators must work with M2M & IoT Service Providers to expand into non-traditional telecommunications services and products in order to offer their consumers more.
