According to the most recent information, starting on January 1, 2021, BSNL would operate as an external agency to manage MTNL’s mobile network operations.

BSNL started operations in Delhi & Mumbai by taking over MTNL’s mobile network

Public telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has opened in Delhi & Mumbai Acquisition of MTNL mobile network on January 1, 2021. As previously reported, on December 10, 2020, DoT BSNL granted a unified license in all 22 telecom circuits in India including Delhi & Mumbai for 20 years.

According to the latest information, from January 1, 2021, BSNL will operate as an outsourcing agency to manage the MTNL mobile network. BSNL CMD submitted a request to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on October 27, 2020. This proposal was discussed at length with the Directors of BSNL and MTNL on December 15, 2020, in the presence of the Deputy Secretary (DoT).

DoT asked CMD BSNL in a letter dated December 31, 2020 to begin managing MTNL’s mobile network in Delhi and Mumbai as its outsourced agency on January 1, 2021. DoT additionally directed CMD BSNL to finish all processes as soon as possible. It is further disclosed that for Delhi & Mumbai LSAs, MTNL would continue to be in charge of regulatory compliance.

This implies that MTNL’s current network will continue to provide mobile services to its clients in Delhi and Mumbai. However, BSNL officials will oversee the management of the MTNL mobile network’s operations. Since the DoT has made it clear that MTNL operates in this capacity and will be in charge of all regulatory reporting and compliance, there won’t be any changes from the standpoint of the consumer.

Areas Serviced by MTNL: LSAs in Delhi and Mumbai

While Mumbai’s service area would encompass New Mumbai and Kalyan, Delhi’s service regions covered the National Capital Region (NCR) such as Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad.

As we previously reported, thanks to a partnership between BSNL and Vodafone, consumers in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) may get seamless connection. In addition to MTNL roaming, BSNL prepaid and post-paid mobile subscribers may access the Vodafone Delhi mobile network when in the Delhi & NCR region. When a BSNL user uses M/s Vodafone as their VLMN when roaming in Delhi, they would be charged at the rate of Rs. 0.45/minute. The aforementioned rates/tariffs are valid for both prepaid and post-paid BSNL mobile subscribers.

On January 1, 2021, BSNL released an EoI (Expression of Interest) for Indian telecom manufacturing businesses to register for and participate in the next 4G contract. The next generation 4G network will be launched by BSNL at about 57,000 tower locations, including the LSAs in Mumbai and Delhi.
