According to the most recent data, only BSNL (without 4G) and Jio saw a gain in market share in 2019 while client bases fell for all other providers.

BSNL & Jio have increased market share, but other operators decline.

The Indian Telecoms Regulatory Authority (TRAI) has released its 2019 Telecom Services Performance Index Annual Report. Jio – saw an increase in market share and customer base in 2019 while all other operators including – Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, Reliance Communication, Tata Tele Services, MTNL & The quadrant has seen a sharp decline in overall productivity.

Reliance Jio’s user base may increase from 280.12 million at the end of December 2018 to 371.07 million at the end of December 2019 with an annual growth rate of 32.47. Jio’s market share increased during the same period, going from 23.38% to 31.65%. A prominent state-owned telecom provider, BSNL, may have 127.70 million users by the end of December 2019, up from 125.81 million at the end of December 2018. The only public sector telecom company that is completely under Indian government control is BSNL.

BSNL’s Outstanding Customer Addition Performance Without 4G

The superior performance attained by BSNL while not having 4G services, even though other commercial carriers are now offering 4G services to customers, is now the most exciting element. With a market share of 10.50% as of the end of December 2018, BSNL has 125.81 million mobile subscribers in India.

Both wireless and wireline subscribers are included in the subscriber base.

By the end of December 2019, BSNL has increased its market share to 10.89%, and as a result, 1.88 million net new customers were added. Given that Jio is offering 4G services whereas BSNL was unable to start its 4G mobile internet services owing to a shortage of spectrum allotment, Jio’s growth rate of 32.47% may be compared to BSNL’s annual growth rate of 1.50% as being better or even better.

Vodafone Idea slipped to No.2 position in 2019.

At the end of December 2018, Vodafone Idea had a sizable market share of 34.98% and 419.03 million subscribers, making it the top mobile provider. However, when compared to all other operators in the nation in 2019, the firm had the worst loss in its client base. With a growth rate of -20.53%, Vodafone Idea lost roughly 86.01 million subscribers in 2019. At the end of December 2019, Vodafone Idea’s market share was 28.40%, behind Jio, who had a 31.65% market share.

In 2019, Bharti Airtel dropped to No. 3 overall.

The story of Bharti Airtel is almost the same where the company lost around 12.69 million customers in 2019. Bharti Airtel was the 2nd largest mobile operator in 2018 with market share of 28.74% and 344.3 million customers. Bharti Airtel’s market share was reduced to 28.28% at the end of December 2019 with annual rate of growth of -3.69%.

Total Telephone Subscriber in India during 2019

There were 1,172.44 million telephone users in India at the end of December 2019, down from 1,197.87 million at the end of December 2018, representing a 2.12% annual reduction.

At a yearly fall rate of 0.57%, telephone subscription in urban areas decreased from 666.28 million at the end of December 2018 to 662.45 million at the end of December 2019. Urban tele-density also decreased, dropping from 159.98 at the end of December 2018 to 156.26 at the end of December 2019, a 2.33% annual fall rate.

At a yearly fall rate of 4.06%, rural telephone subscription fell from 531.59 million at the end of December 2018 to 509.99 million at the end of December 2019. With a yearly fall rate of 4.75%, rural tele-density likewise declined from 59.50 at the end of December 2018 to 56.67 at the end of December 2019.

At a yearly fall rate of 3.15%, India’s total tele-density decreased from 91.45 at the end of December 2018 to 88.56 at the end of December 2019.

Out of the total telephone subscription, the shares of Rural telephone subscription decreased from 44.38% at the end of December 2018 to 43.50% at the end of December 2019. However, share of Urban telephone subscription in total telephone subscription, increased from 55.62% at the end of December 2018 to 56.50% at the end of December 2019.

Growth in Wireless Subscriber Base in 2019

At the end of December 2019, Reliance Jio overtook Vodafone Idea Ltd as the market leader with a 32.14% market share of the entire customer base for wireless telephones.

The greatest number of telephone customers added by Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd in terms of net addition was 89.90 million in 2019. Its annual growth rate was 32.09% in 2019. At the end of December 2019, BSNL had a market share rise of 10.26% and a 3.27% annual growth rate.

As of December 31, 2019, PSUs (BSNL & MTNL) have just a 10.55% market share in wireless telephone subscribers, while private telecom service providers held 89.45% of the market.

BSNL is the leading operator in wireline service with 9.58 million subscriber at the end of December 2019 followed by Bharti with 4.31 million subscribers.
