According to recent reports, Narendra Modi will dedicate and open an underwater optical fiber cable that connects Chennai and Port Blair.

Prime Minister to inaugurate BSNL’s CANI from Chennai to Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

On August 10, 2020, via video conference, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will dedicate and launch an OFC connecting Chennai and Port Blair for the country. Along with Swaraj Dweep (Havelock), Little Andaman, Car Nicobar, Kamorta, Great Nicobar, Long Island, and Rangat, the underwater cable will also link Port Blair to these locations.

The supply of quicker, more dependable mobile and landline telecom services to Andaman & Nicobar Islands would be possible thanks to this link from Chennai to Andaman & Nicobar Islands (CANI), on par with other regions of India. On December 30, 2018, at Port Blair, the Honourable Prime Minister laid the cornerstone for this project.

This project was carried out by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), and 2300 kilometers of submarine OFC cable were installed for a total of roughly Rs 1224 crore. The Technical Consultants are Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL). The Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF), a division of the Ministry of Communications’ Department of Telecommunications, provides funding for the project on behalf of the Indian government.

After the official opening, BSNL will be able to provide upgraded mobile, Bharat Fiber, and internet services in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. In a press statement on August 5, 2020, the operator asked the Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ authorities to grant the necessary access for BSNL employees and vehicles to the island in order to activate the CANI System and offer top-notch telecom services throughout the islands.

Between Chennai and Port Blair, the undersea OFC link will provide capacity of 2 x 200 Gigabits per second (Gbps), while between Port Blair and the other islands, it would provide bandwidth of 2 x 100 Gbps. From the perspective of customers, as well as for strategic and governance considerations, the provision of stable, strong, and high-speed telecom and broadband infrastructure in these Islands will be a major achievement. The restricted backhaul bandwidth provided by satellites that limited 4G mobile services will also significantly improve.

A surge in tourism and the creation of jobs will elevate living conditions and give the islands’ economy a boost thanks to improved telecom and broadband access. Additionally, improved connection would make it easier to offer e-Government services like medical and teleeducation. Small businesses will profit from e-commerce prospects, while educational institutions will use the increased bandwidth availability for e-learning and information exchange. Better connection will assist medium and big businesses, business process outsourcing firms, and other organizations.

Dear readers, we would appreciate hearing from you in the comments section regarding this famous underwater OFC project that BSNL has been working on.
