Equinix to invest $100 million to support Malaysia’s digital industry.

To address Malaysia’s growing need for digital infrastructure—which is being spurred by investments in 5G and cloud services—Equinox plans to build its first data center there in 2024. Top cloud service providers will have simple access to the KL1 data center, improving connectivity.

  • More than $100 million is invested by Equinix in Malaysia’s economic growth and digital transformation.
  • The expansion of Equinix in Malaysia and Indonesia shows the company’s ongoing commitment to supporting the regional digital economy.
  • The KL1 data center in Cyberjaya would initially provide 450 cabinets and 1,300 square meters of colocation space.

Equinix, a global provider of digital infrastructure, said that it would open its first data center in Kuala Lumpur in the first quarter of 2024. This is in response to the company’s most recent declaration that it will join Malaysia’s digital market by setting up a data center in Johor. Equinix stated that it will provide more than $100 million to the corporate community and economic growth of Malaysia.

Empowering Businesses in the Digital Age

Malaysia has emerged as one of the ASEAN region’s fastest-growing markets for data centers, particularly in Johor and Kuala Lumpur, as e-commerce, cloud services, and investments in 5G technology all rise in the country. Equinix intends for its expansion to meet Malaysia’s rising demand from both domestic and global companies looking for digital infrastructure capacity.

According to Synergy Research, demand for digital infrastructure is anticipated to remain high as Malaysia launches Phase 2 of its My DIGITAL plan for a digital economy. The ASEAN data center colocation market is presently dominated by Malaysia, which is anticipated to develop at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 11% between 2022 and 2027.

Equinix KL1 Data Centre facility

Equinix claims that with an initial investment of about $40 million each, the soon-to-be-built Kuala Lumpur data center facility known as KL1 and the recently announced JH1 facility in Johor will provide the crucial digital infrastructure for businesses to succeed in Malaysia’s digital economy.

KL1, which is scheduled to open in Q1 2024, is located in the Cyberjaya neighborhood of Kuala Lumpur’s Multimedia Super Corridor. The first phase of KL1 will have 450 cabinets and 1,300 square meters of colocation space. Once everything is finished, it will feature 2,630 square meters of colocation space and 900 cabinets in total.

Businesses, content providers, and foreign networks should find it simpler to exchange significant volumes of Internet data thanks to KL1 and Equinix Internet.

Equinix Data Centres

Equinix now operates 51 data centers in the Asia-Pacific region, including Singapore, Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, and India. The company’s decision to expand into Indonesia and Malaysia further demonstrates its dedication to supporting the region’s emerging digital ecosystem and addressing the shifting needs of businesses in the digital era.
