Equinix and Astra International form joint venture to develop digital infrastructure in Indonesia.

To develop Indonesia’s digital infrastructure and help local firms better utilize new technologies, Equinix and Astra have formed a joint venture. An International Business Exchange (IBX) data center will be established and operated right in the middle of Jakarta.

A joint venture (JV) between Equinix, a worldwide provider of digital infrastructure, and PT Astra International has been launched. Its goal is to build digital infrastructure in Indonesia to help both domestic and foreign businesses accelerate their digital transformation.

The national digital transformation initiative in Indonesia has a target of 30 million micro, small, and medium companies (UMKM) going digital by 2024, making digital infrastructure essential to accomplishing this goal.

Equinix-Astra joint venture

The Equinix-Astra joint venture, which is controlled by Equinix 75% of the time and Astra 25% of the time, combines Astra’s substantial experience in Indonesia with Equinix’s expertise in global digital infrastructure. With the use of technologies like hybrid multi-cloud, 5G, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Artificial Intelligence (AI), this alliance intends to assist Indonesian businesses in expanding their digital capabilities.

The joint venture with Astra is in keeping with Indonesia’s aim to driving digital transformation across the whole nation, according to a statement from Equinix Asia Pacific. By providing the Indonesian population with the capacity to fulfill their computing, storage, and edge data center demands, the alliance intends to open up new possibilities for Indonesia’s digital future.

Jakarta’s core business area will house the JK1 data center.

The joint company will first construct and run JK1, or the International Business Exchange (IBX) data center, in the heart of Jakarta, with future intentions to extend throughout Indonesia. After being fully prepared, the eight-story IBX JK1 data center will provide more than 1,600 cabinets and more than 5,300 square meters of floor space when it begins functioning in the second part of 2024.

JK1 is near to the primary internet exchange and situated in Jakarta’s core business area. JK1’s architecture incorporates sustainability, leveraging cutting-edge tools like Equinix cooling arrays to support business objectives and the environment of Indonesian businesses.

Indonesia’s colocation market

With major cloud service providers including Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Alibaba Cloud announcing the opening of cloud regions in Indonesia, the country’s colocation industry is anticipated to reach USD 1.2 billion in value by 2027. Joint ventures between Equinix and Astra are ideally positioned to take advantage of this market’s growing potential.
