According to recent reports, BSNL would construct an undersea fiber link between Kochi and Lakshadweep.

BSNL to establish submarine Optical Fibre Cable connectivity between Kochi and Lakshadweep Islands

The supply of Submarine Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) Connectivity between Mainland (Kochi) and Lakshadweep Islands (KLI Project) has received clearance from the Union Cabinet, which is presided over by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

The project execution agency for this renowned, Rs 1072 crore project has been named as Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL), and it is scheduled to be finished by May 2023. According to the Project, Kochi would be connected directly to 11 Lakshadweep Islands—Kavaratti, Kalpeni, Agati, Amini, Androth, Minicoy, Bangaram, Bitra, Chetlat, and Kiltan—via a dedicated undersea optical fiber cable (OFC).
It is obvious that societal and economic progress are closely linked to the construction of telecom infrastructure. Telecommunications connection significantly helps in job generation. The present approval for the installation of undersea optical fiber cable connectivity will considerably improve telecommunications capabilities in the Lakshadweep Islands by providing a lot of capacity. About Rs.1072 crore is the implementation cost estimate.

The submarine connectivity project will have a vital role in the delivery of e-Governance services at the doorstep of citizens, the potential development of fisheries, coconut-based industries, and high-value tourism, and educational development in terms of tele-education and in health care in terms of telemedicine facilities.

It will aid in the creation of various firms, boost e-commerce operations, and give educational institutions the necessary assistance for information exchange. The Lakshadweep Islands might develop as a center for logistical services.
The project’s technical consultant will be Telecommunications Consultant India Ltd. (TCIL), which will work with the Department of Telecommunications’ Universal Service Obligation Fund. The financing agency, USOF, will have ownership of the project’s asset under DoT.

The Union Territory of Lakshadweep, a collection of islands in the Arabian Sea, is of enormous strategic importance to India. For the residents of these islands as well as from a strategic perspective for the entire nation, the provision of secure, strong, dependable, and inexpensive telecom services is of the highest significance.

Lakshadweep now only has access to satellites for telecom connectivity, but even then, the bandwidth is just 1 Gbps. A key barrier to offering data services, which are necessary for e-governance, e-education, e-banking, and other services essential to the inclusion and development of society, is a lack of bandwidth. As a result, the government is committed to constructing communications infrastructure in the Lakshadweep Islands. It has been planned for some time to install the undersea optical fiber connection to the Lakshadweep Islands. In line with accomplishing the national goal of improving e-governance services and realizing the vision of Digital India is the high bandwidth connectivity facility to the Lakshadweep Islands.

In August 2020, BSNL completed the CANI (Chennai to Andaman Nicobar Islands) project.

Early this year, BSNL finished the CANI project, which connects mainland Chennai to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. In addition to Swaraj Dweep (Havelock), Little Andaman, Car Nicobar, Kamorta, Great Nicobar, Long Island, and Rangat are all connected to Port Blair by the underwater cable. This project was carried out by BSNL, and 2300 kilometers of submarine OFC cable were installed for a total of roughly Rs 1224 crore.
