DoT mandates BSNL/MTNL Services for State Government and Central Government Departments

As we previously reported, the DoT has mandated that all central government agencies, ministries, CPSEs, and Autonomous Bodies use BSNL and MTNL’s telecom services. The Department of Transportation has now directed all departments, agencies, and PSUs of the State Government to use the telecom facilities and services provided by BSNL and MTNL for internet, broadband, landline, and leased line requirements in a new letter written to the Chief Secretaries of all State Governments.

According to a letter from the DoT dated October 12th, 2020, to the chief secretaries of all state governments:

The Department of Telecommunication, Government of India, has administrative responsibility over BSNL and MTNL as Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs). Most government departments, including the armed forces, have their communication needs met by BSNL and MTNL. These PSUs also satisfy the core banking network requirement for the majority of Banks and Financial Institutions. Both BSNL and MTNL, which are controlled by the Indian government, are reputable service providers. BSNL also has a sizable rural network.

The letter also stated that orders have been issued to all central government departments and units across India, mandating the use of BSNL and MTNL’s capacities for internet, broadband, landline, and leased line requirements by central government ministries and departments.

BSNL Revival Package by Central Government

Since these two telecom businesses are regarded as key assets of India, the Central Government has chosen to resuscitate both BSNL and MTNL, as is well known. Even in extremely challenging terrains, BSNL/MTNL is meeting the country’s connection demands. These two PSUs provide the highest consideration and attention in order to meet the communication demands of our Armed Forces / Paramilitary Forces. At the event of national tragedies like floods, landslides, and other disasters, BSNL also offers Global Satellite Phone Service (GSPS) to our disaster recovery teams and security forces.

Recently, BSNL was successful in obtaining Rs 8500 crore using government of India-guaranteed sovereign bonds. The revenue gained by selling sovereign bonds, according to BSNL CMD, would be utilised for debt refinancing and to fulfill BSNL’s CAPEX requirements. As part of the Cabinet’s approval of the BSNL Revival package, the issuance of Rs 8500 crores in Government Guaranteed Bonds was also approved.

Dear readers, we would appreciate hearing your thoughts about BSNL Services in the comments below. How many of you think that BSNL’s continued existence is necessary to maintain the Indian telecom market’s stability?
